WHAT IS ISO 45001:2018 STANDARD?

You’ve to know what the standard is all about before any other thing. The standard was put into use in 2018 to cater for matters relating to health and safety in the workplace. It was derived from the phased-out OHSAS 18001, ILO-OSH guidelines and international labour standards and conventions (ILSs).

ISO 45001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for an Occupational health and safety management system.

Just like every other ISO standard in existence, it maintains the same high-level structure with them all, otherwise known as the Annex L structure. For example, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Well, ISO 45001 is not meant to be or intended to be a legally bound document but any organization can use it as a tool to eliminate or minimize risk at work.

The first-party, second-party or third-party audits, ISO 19001 AND ISO /IEC 17021.

What is an audit?

An audit is a systematic independent and documented process for obtaining audit evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria are fulfilled.

When you talk about the audit, you’ve to know that we have three types of audit and they’re first-party audit second-party audit and third-party audit.

First-party audits.

The first-party audit is called the internal audit carried out in an organization on its management system. For example, auditing is based on organizational procedures.

Second-party audits.

It can be called supplier auditing. For example, you’re auditing your supplier or someone buying your services and products is coming to audit you or the supplier to your organization is the one you’re auditing his place.

Third-party audit.

A third-party audit is a certification audit usually done by an independent body for legal, regulatory or certification purposes. This particular auditing is based on the referenced regulations or standards.

ISO 19001.

They’re the guidelines for auditing management systems.

ISO /IEC 17021.

The requirements for bodies providing auditing and certification of management systems.

THE CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE.

Delegates are advised to take foundation courses in ISO 45001:2018 before they can take the ISO 45001:2018 Lead Auditor Course. This will help them to be familiar with the basis of the course.
But if you’re a fast learner, you can proceed to do the lead auditor course.

However, ISO 45001:2018 lead auditor course is a program of five days with approximately 40hrs. And on the last day, you’re expected to write a 2-hour examination to evaluate your knowledge.

A pass mark of 70 per cent is needed for you to complete the course successfully with your certificate.

Having your certificate will satisfy the training requirements for your initial certification to become an OHSMS auditor. If you’ve done the CQI-IRCA-approved course, you can become an IRCA Certified auditor.

During the examination, for those writing the course in a language different from their mother tongue. You would be required to write it with a clean copy of the ISO 45001:2018 Standard document and a dictionary. Even though it’s an open-book examination.

Classroom learning is designed to be practical and not only theoretical. This is because auditing is a practical venture. So, various simulations on audits would be carried out during the class.

When you’re in the class during the training, it’s expedient that you participate in all classroom demonstrations, tests, and practicals so that you’ll be able to know the details of the training course. And also know that you would be assessed on your performances during those times.
