An employer, Bernard Mathews foods LTD has been fined £400000 following two separate incidents involving two employees leading to injuries.
On 28 January 2020, An employee, Mr Colin Frewin, was assigned to clean a large screw conveyor used to move poultry turkeys along to chill them.
While at the job, he noticed a turkey stuck on the gantry between the spin chillers. In his attempt to remove the turkey, he was drawn into the machine. Immediately, a fellow worker engaged the emergency stop.
Previously, on 12 August 2019, Mr Adriano Gama, an employee, was working in the same plant on the surplus production line. One of the wings became stuck in the belt under the machine. His attempt to push the wing out made the conveyor to caught his gloved hand, thereby drawing his hand to the machine.
Health and Safety Executive report on the health and safety breaches
HSE principal inspector, Mr Adam Hills, noted that the two incidents involving health and safety breaches are avoidable if there is a safe system of work and controls in the plant.
Fines for the two incidents.
Bernard Matthews Food Ltd of Sparrowhawk Road, Halesworth in Suffolk pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. They were fined £400,000 and ordered to pay costs of £15,000.
