Site conditions vary, and no two excavation sites are alike. Because of this, each Job must be treated individually. There are many safety precautions to ensure safe working conditions when dealing with site excavations.

- Always conduct a soil test to determine appropriate sloping, benching, and shoring before excavating.
- Ensure there is a permit to work for excavation duly authorized by a competent person before the start of each task.
- Remember to remove all materials, trees, and items that may pose a challenge before excavations.
- Check for underground utilities and other installations and arrange with the appropriate agencies to remove them before excavating if they pose a problem.
- Put warning signs and barricades in place to protect people from the excavation site and help coordinate traffic there.
- Check the oxygen level and other gases to ensure workers’ safety in any excavation deeper than 4 feet.
- Do not excavate below adjacent structures or sources of vibration if they are near the base of the footing of a foundation, wall, sidewalk, or pavement.
- Always use the services of a competent person to carry out any work daily or as site conditions change.
