A care home has been fined because they didn’t do enough to protect people from vulnerable patients who are dangerous to themselves.
The complex health and safety executive investigation reveals that Alexandra House on Wells home is a care home that had Melissa Matthiason, an 18-year-old, being murdered by Jason Conroy on 12th October 2014.
Alexandra House on Wells Road is one of the homes run by Alexandra Homes Bristol Ltd. The care home is mainly for residential care services for adults that have Asperger syndrome and autism spectrum.
Melissa Matthiason and Jason Conroy moved into the residence in August 2014. Before moving into the home, Jason Conroy had strangled a member of the staff from a school in Shropshire.
Because of this, Jason Conroy’s record of strangling a member of staff needs monitoring while he’s in the home. The report said he posed a risk to others while having sexual aggression towards women,
Health and safety executive investigation
A health and safety executive investigation revealed that Alexandra House did not have suitable staff to deal with Jason Conroy. Jason Conroy was not adequately monitored. There were insufficient methods in place to provide safety for people in Alexandra House.
The sentence/ Jail term
Jason Conroy was jailed in 2015 and ordered to serve a minimum of 19 years for the murder of Melissa.
On 1st December, Alexander Homes pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3 (1) HASAWA 1974 and management of health and safety at work regulations. They were fined £125000 and ordered to pay £41000
