A skip hire company has been fined after an employee sustained crush injuries to his arm in a conveyor belt.

What Leads to the crush injuries from the conveyor belt?

On May 30 2018. An employee of Bateman Skips ltd was told to repair a conveyor belt that feeds the picking stations.

While doing his repair and realigning the belt, his arm was drawn into the mechanism of the conveyor belt resulting in a crush injury to that arm.

The outcome of the investigation of the accident.

During the investigation, Health and safety executive HSE found that the Company, Bateman skips Ltd failed to provide adequate training and suitable safeguards for the workforce when dealing with blockages and adjustments in the equipment. 

How many fines were on the Bateman Skips ltd?

Bateman Skips ltd of Broadmead Lane, Keynsham, Bristol, pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety act at work 1974.

They were fined £50,000 and equally made to pay a cost of £10,205.80.

The HSE inspector, Berenice Ray, while speaking concerning the accident, said,

“Those in control of work have a duty to assess the risks and devise safe working methods to provide the necessary information, instruction and training to their workforce.

“Employers must ensure that the power source of machinery such as this is isolated and physically locked off whenever the guards are removed.”
